AIA Design Charrette 2017 “Making State Street Work”

In collaboration with the AIA of Santa Barbra, Ellen Bildsten, Brian Cearnal, and Detty Peikert organized “Making State Street Work”, a design charrette and day of urban planning and architecture. Nine teams of local architects, planners, and landscape architects came together to imagine approaches for revitalizing State Street while celebrating the many wonderful aspects of Santa Barbara's downtown. The teams had about seven hours to fervently develop ideas for State Street, which they then presented to a full house of interested members of the community. Some of the most interesting ideas that came of this charrette will be presented to the Santa Barbara City Council as possible solutions and ways to reinvigorate Santa Barbara’s downtown area.

The challenge was to brainstorm fundamental changes to the area while adjusting to global shifts in the retail industry.
